Daily CareerTIP® Advice

Monday - Are you able to lead?
Imagine you are Moses - leading over a million people on a very long hike from one land to another. Overwhelming? You need all the leadership help you can get. Moses selected leaders to help - men with competence as well as character - "able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain."

Tuesday - Leadership requires competence in three ways
Leadership competence rests on three abilities: 1. Performing your individual core talent, knowledge and skill to the best of your ability. 2. Managing things, money and events for which you are responsible. 3. Directing people individually and as a team. Learning leadership competence may not be as easy as 1-2-3, but you can do it. To be an effective leader, you must do it.

Wednesday - Find your sweet spot and play in the zone
You have a sweet spot of ever-changing gifts and passions - abilities, interests, personality and values. Playing in the zone is continously exploring, educating and employing your sweet spot in service to others to the manifold grace of God. Meaning, do your best with your best all the time everywhere for everyone.

Thursday - People do not like to be managed
But they do appreciate your help in planning, organizing and following-up on the work they have to do. Think through what needs to be accomplished by when and what resources you have - time, money, things and people. Take the time to learn the latest and greatest in management skills and techniques.

Friday - Directing people starts with...
...recruiting the right people to the right jobs - defining the work in terms of results, responsibilities, duties and authority followed by describing the type of person in terms of experience, abiltities, interests, personality and values. The best way to find the best candidates is from personal referrals, and the best way to pick the best is through personal references.

Saturday - Don't make your followers guess
Nothing erodes your leadership faster than poor or incomplete communication. If your followers are saying "I don't know what he (or she) wants," then tell them. Give them orientation. Be clear about what you want accomplished by when. If it matters how, tell them how. Give them feedback - affirmation for good stuff - correction for bad stuff.

Sunday - Don't even think about managing...
...without calculating with God. Writes Oswald Chambers, "God seems to have a delightful way of upsetting the things we have calculated on without taking Him into account. We get into circumstances which were not chosen by God, and suddenly find we have been cacluating without God." Ask God for a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the true knowledge of Jesus Christ.
