When Moses, a leader of millions, looked for leadership, he followed this advice: "Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens."

Daily CareerTIP® Advice
Monday - Character - #1 quality of leadership
You must demonstrate trustworthiness on a continuing basis for people to follow you. It means meeting your commitments, and being a promise keeper. Walking with integrity, and being consistent in your words and deeds. Serving with sincerity, and demonstrating your support for, care of and trust in others. As David wrote in Psalm 15: "He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart..."

Tuesday - Competence - #2 quality of leadership
No one will follow you if they think you are incompetent. Since you can't know everything, what do you have to know to be a leader? First, you must possess specifically relevant functional and/or industry expertise. Second, you must know how to manage things - plan, organize and control. Third, you must know how to direct people - hire and fire, assign and instruct, encourage and stimulate. For all the things you need to know, consider this advice: "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

Wednesday - Charisma - #3 quality of leadership
Not a function of outgoing personality or popularity, but rather the product of four inward characteristics: Vision - seeing a preferred future. Wisdom - knowing how to get there. Strength - personal energy and endurance. Courage - the heart to face fearful situations and move through them. From the last words of King David: "He who rules over men righteously...is as the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, when the tender grass springs out of the earth, through sunshine after rain."

Thursday - Functional Competencies - 1st quality that fits the role
Leadership can grow from any combination of job-related knowledge, skills and abilities. Leaders rise from all types of occupations and positions. Different leadership roles will call for different core competencies. On the one hand, develop competencies required of you by your role. On the other hand, select leadership roles that take greatest advantage of your strongest competencies. Do what you do best for what your followers need most. According to King David, even the skill of a shepherd can be transferred to the role of a king: "So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands."

Friday - Industry Experiences - 2nd quality that fits the role
Leadership arises from and is required by every conceivable type of organization - from farming and mining to construction and manufacturing. From transportation and utilities to communications. From wholesale to retail. From finance to insurance. From services like health and education to technology. Draw from your industry experiences what is required by the leadership in which you serve. According to King Solomon "Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before obscure men."

Saturday - Traits - 3rd quality that fits the role
Leadership is about your personal traits. From your personal presence, dress and grooming to your personal interests and activities. From your personality to your personal style. Develop your personal traits to fit the role, or look for a leadership role that best fits your personal traits. King David declared, "I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well."

Sunday - Standards - 4th quality that fits the role
The last and most important of the leadership qualities - standards that match the leadership requirements of a particular leadership role. There must be a compatibility of purpose and a harmony of values between leaders and the tasks set before them. From the pen of the apostle Paul, God is the starting point of your purpose and values: "For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen." (Romans 11:36)
