Advanced advice on how to write resumes

Daily CareerTIP® Advice
Monday - Retrieve and review your resume
Read your most recent resume with a pencil in hand. Circle the really good stuff. Put an "X" through anything that is questionable. Add notes on new accomplishments, awards, assignments. If you have no resume, make a quick list of places you worked, jobs you've had and accomplishments you enjoyed. Remember, "let each one examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting..."

Tuesday - Do not update your old resume
Always start fresh. Strip-out facts and figures from old resumes, job performance reviews and your new notes. List them in these categories: Employers and assignments. Accomplishments and awards. Knowledge, skills and abilities. Education, degrees and majors. "No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins."

Thursday - The fine art of word-smithing
Tips that transform your resume from fast food into fine dining: 1. Fewer words mean more communication. Be concise, to the point. 2. Try to break phrases and sentences at the end of a line. 3. Replace as many adjectives as possible with verbs. 4. Search for and select words with care. "A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his words, and the deeds of a man's hands will return to him."

Friday - Resumes without mistakes
Write your resumes so that they make hits and runs, but have no errors. Ask family and friends to check your resume for spelling and grammar mistakes. Be sure every fact in your resume is in fact an accurate fact.

Saturday - Extra activites make resumes extraordinary
Consider adding Saturday and other weekend personal activities to your resume - like hobbies, sports, community or church activities - especially achievements and awards that indicate extra experience and leadership. Who knows? Maybe your recreation could even become your vocation.

Sunday - Resume power through prayer
Sunday is a great day to take your resume to God and ask Him to bless it - not only what it says, but also to whom you send it. If thoughts come to mind about changing any part of your resume, think about changing it ... "taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ."
